How to play Finding Needle in the Stack
Finding Needle in the Stack is a free 3D needle in a haystack game you play in your browser. One steel needle is hidden somewhere inside a haystack of five million pieces of hay. Dig tunnels, collect the junk and treasure you uncover, sell it, buy better tools and machines, and keep going until the needle glints back at you.

The basics
- Dig. Walk up to the stack and hold the dig button to pull hay out. Keep digging to make tunnels big enough to walk into.
- Collect. Nails, bottle caps, coins, keys, rings and even diamonds are mixed into the hay. Grab them as they fall loose.
- Sell. When your backpack is full, walk to the Trading Post next to the stack and sell everything.
- Upgrade. Spend your money on faster tools, a metal detector, a bigger backpack and Auto-Sifter machines.
- Find the needle. Somewhere in the middle of all that hay is one needle. Spot it, grab it and you win the stack.
There are two ways to play. Classic has the full shop with tools, detectors and machines. Purist removes all of that: no upgrades, no detector and no machines, just your gloves, the stack and one needle.

Every digging tool
Each tool digs faster and wider than the one before it. You start with gloves; everything else is bought at the Trading Post.

The metal detector
The detector beeps faster the closer you are to buried metal, so you can dig straight toward coins, rings and the needle instead of guessing. Diamonds aren't metal, so the detector won't find them. From Mk III the detector can also tell you when a signal is the needle.

Auto-Sifters
Auto-Sifters are machines that tunnel into the stack on their own and sift the hay. Everything valuable they find is sold automatically, so money keeps coming in while you dig somewhere else. If a sifter finds the needle, it drops it in its tray under a beam of light for you to grab. The first one costs $4,000, each one after that costs more, and you can run up to six at once.

Common junk is worth little, but rare finds add up fast. Everything except the diamond shows up on the metal detector.

Tips to find the needle faster
- Buy the Hay Hook first. At $150 it pays for itself within minutes.
- Get a detector early. Even Mk I stops you digging blind for valuables.
- Put money into Auto-Sifters. They dig, sift and sell for you, even while you're busy elsewhere.
- Save up for Mk III. Once the detector can tell you which signal is the needle, the hunt gets much shorter.
- Dig tunnels tall enough to walk in. You can only squeeze into spaces your body fits through, so clear the floor as well as the walls.
- Mind the roof. Hay that's no longer connected to anything collapses, so a big cavern can bring its ceiling down.
- Use the whole stack. The needle can be anywhere, so work around the outside as well as through the middle.

Is Finding Needle in the Stack free?
Yes. It's completely free and runs in your web browser. There's nothing to download or install.
Does the game save my progress?
Yes. Progress saves automatically in your browser, including every bit of hay you've dug. Close the tab and press Continue next time. You can also export a save file from Settings and import it on another device.

How do I find the needle faster?
